Amazon has CENSORED my Book

I don’t know if I should be horrified or proud that my novel CODE NAME: Infamy has been censored by Amazon for not being PC. I will admit to being shocked; it is hardly a controversial book. It is my forth novel, all have been sold on Amazon since 2006 or so. CODE NAME: Infamy, is traditionally published by Blank Slate Press. My Editor was as shocked as I was, that I have been censored by Amazon.

I set up an advertisement for CODE NAME: Infamy two days ago; like I have done for Project 7 Alpha, Vengeance at Midway and Guadalcanal, and ENDGAME in the Pacific. I write historically based thrillers, pretty mainstream stuff really. I hope that they are thrilling and move the reader, but worthy of being censored they are not. Its history, how can you censor history?

Yesterday I received a message from Amazon saying they would not run my advertisement, I asked why from a manager?

I am sorry for any inconvenience felt. I can explain this.

It was rejected due to the “potentially offensive iconography on the cover image.

I request you to alter the cover image according to the guidelines and reschedule the campaign.

“Potentially offensive”, sooo that pretty much covers ANYTHING on the planet forever! Potentially Offensive….Really?

Here it is:

Code Name: Infamy is available for pre-order now.

Code Name: Infamy is available for pre-order now.

They offered a service to sterilize my cover, I chose not to.

I was a Cold Warrior, should I be offended by the Hammer and Sickle of the USSR, the Chinese Star?

OFFENDED! I’M OFFENDED BY THIS ICONOGRAPHY! Oh, wait….that’s my own airplane….never mind.

Has it come to this? Censorship is now based on “potentially offensive iconography”. Amazing, we are doomed. If you are so weak, so absolutely pathetic that seeing historical symbols from past cultures and wars frightens and offends you…well all I can say is you need help. And to be honest, I do not believe anyone is “potentially offended” by REALITY ICONOGRAPHY…except, apparently, an International Corporation that endorses Politically Correct Censorship.

Like I said, Amazing.

  1. Holy cow. The swastica prevents you from advertising your book? I could possibly see their point if it was representing a modern hate group, but your cover is presented in the historical context of WWII. Does Amazon seriously not understand context? It seems like they should make the effort to discuss their concern. Banning books is a slippery slope. I hope they see the error of their ways. Besides, you have been an amazingly loyal Amazon author. Total bummer.

I’ve communicated with 4 reps. No flexibility, mindless reference to general rules. One did reference the Swastika and suggest I redo cover. I explained I wrote historical thrillers/fiction. They didn’t care. I then told them I had no intention of being censored by their advertising department. I will gets ads else where. Thanks for the support!

Hope you get enough attention from your readership to get this fixed; even if you ultimately take your ad dollars elsewhere. Baffling that this could happen to anybody, much less an established author who writes in your genre.

Thanks Taylor, but I’m afraid they won’t budge and I refuse to change my cover. So no ads on Amazon.

    Hey Chip,

What a crock! Are you a neo-nazi? Your fans want to know.

Haha, yea who would ever figure a novel on WW2 with a Nazi bad guy might have a swastika on the cover…shocking, and upsetting!
